HIS ADVICE :
I came up by being an assistant at a production company; then got promoted there; then moved to a studio, etc. Unless you’ve achieved in a major way in a related field, you’re always going to start out as someone’s assistant. If you like being on the set, you can try to get a gig as a production assistant on a movie, TV show, or commercial. If not, then you can try to work as an intern or an assistant at a production company, an agency, a management company, or a distributor. Also, if you’re equally interested in TV, you could add “a TV network.”
If you think you might actually enjoy being an AGENT, then an agent training program is a terrific thing to do. People at agencies see everything and meet everyone.
Beyond that, my standard advice — because it works — is to make an honest list of what you enjoy most as a consumer of media, and then try to work for the people who make the stuff at the top of that list. It’s a bit counter-intuitive, because we tend to put the things we love most and the people we admire most on a pedestal, and assume they’re unreachable. But actually, you’re more likely to be hired by the people you admire most, because you know more about what they do and are more passionate about what you’ll be doing (which also means you’ll do a better job). So if what you love most in the world is WES ANDERSON movies, then your mission is to figure out a path to get to Wes Anderson. Etc. etc. etc. And do be honest — if what you love most is “The Bachelor,” then THAT’s your mission.

An award winning AMERICAN ABSTRACT COLOR PAINTER no less. SHE is known for her highly charged chromatic oil paintings. Her WORK is in collections in EUROPE, AUSTRALIA and the US. She started painting seriously in college after taking a basic color course at UNION COLLEGE, New York. JOSEF ALBERS, the color theorist, developed the program, which explored the properties of color, transparency and light in color relationships. SHE went on to study painting at the SAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE where she received her degree. Always an ABSTRACT painter, COLOUR has been her “subject” for over 30 years. “Colour is a unique language that has the power to awaken and lift the spirit,” she says.
After living and painting in the SOUTH OF FRANCE, for 20 years, she returned home to NEW YORK CITY to pursue her art and to become more involved in the New York art world. When she first arrived, she painted at the ART STUDENTS LEAGUE. After leaving the league she opened a studio space in midtown Manhattan. Presently, she divides her time between her New York City studio and her studio in SO CAL. She has shown her work often in New York in solo and group shows including SIDESHOW GALLERY in W’BURG, Brooklyn and the AFFORDABLE ART FAIR in Manhattan.
Dee has lectured on Colour, “Intentionality and Inspiration”, she can be seen in a recent DOCUMENTARY about New York artists, “WHO’S AFRAID OF RED YELLOW BLUE” by filmmaker JEFFERY COLLINS and she was recently interviewed by MICHAEL CORBIN, “THE ART BOOK GUY”.
SHE is also the creator of several fine art COLOUR GUIDES that are distributed through artist material stores world wide under the name of “MAGIC PALLETTE.”

BEHIND THE SCENES with artist GABRIEL DON creator of CLEANSING CONCORDIA.
GABRIEL is a multidisciplinary ARTIST or RENAISSANCE WOMAN who works in a variety of mediums. She received her MFA in CREATIVE WRITING at THE NEW SCHOOL, where she worked as the chapbook and reading series coordinator. Her work has appeared in The BROOKLYN RAIL, GREAT WEATHER FOR MEDIA’S ANTHOLOGY ‘ The Understanding Between Foxes and Light’, A MINOR, WESTERLY and is forthcoming in MASCARA LITERARY REVIEW and THE LEGENDARY. She has appeared in VISUAL POEMS such as WOMAN WITHOUT UMBRELLA and UNBOUND. She started several reading-soiree series, is editorial staff at LIT and participates in live art events around NEW YORK. GABRIEL DON is also available on Amazon as a Bookdress who has performed in various literary, art and public spaces including the MET.
CLEANSING CONCORDIA is a participative ritual inspired by the venue, the history of MARTIN LUTHER and religious sacraments such as baptism and communion. Martin Luther turned away from the Catholic Church and it’s capitalist nature, taking issue with indulgences as a means to buy one’s way out of purgatory, when he saw peasants giving away their life savings for salvation. The AUDIENCE and ARTIST will wash their hands of the current dominant doctrines, debating and discussing issues such as economic escapism, paradise with a price, consumerism and the media with poetry and water. This piece encourages a lively conversation and confession about contemporary vehicles that convince us we are not okay just as we are, that we must change ourselves and spend money in order to be ‘perfect’ or ‘loved.’
BEHIND THE SCENES with ARTIST/NEUROSCIENTIST: JESSIE LAMPRECHT creator of ‘THE BODY’
JESSIE LAMPRECHT is an ARTIST originally from Long Island who works in a variety of media from explorations in painting, collage, and tattoos to mixed media installation works. When she is not making art she is pursuing an education in Neuroscience, Cognitive Science and Art History at BROOKLYN COLLEGE where she also works as a Neuroscience Research Assistant.
Her interest in collage and assemblage art comes literally alive in her latest interactive assemblage “THE BODY” which physically engages the viewer to assemble a form through the ritual exchange of sacred objects. These objects are directly collected from the Church which is the site of the installation. The piece explores themes of fabrication of bodily existence through communal ritual. Inspired by Genesis 1:27, it explores the notion that human form of all shapes and sizes is divinely inspired. The form of the piece is derived by an impression of one person from the audience on sand. By imprinting the sand with the body of the viewer it is implied that every viewer’s body is in the image of God. The piece engages the viewer in a way that is physical and to create a form through functional interaction and collaboration. This puts the artist in the role of conceptual creator and engages the audience in the role of process creators. Both formal and theoretical inspiration can be traced back to works by artists FELIZ GONZALEZ-TORRES and ANNA MENDIETA who create sculpture that is personalized by their body’s relation to the physical object’s composition.
BEHIND THE SCENES with PLAYWRIGHT and FOUNDER of PENINSULA ART SPACE: ERIC FALLEN. He authored and stars in the piece PRAYER
Eric Fallen is a PLAYWRIGHT and a SCREENWRITER His plays have been presented in New York at the LION THEATRE, the PETER JAY SHARP THEATRE, SOHO PLAYHOUSE and HB STUDIO. SAMUEL FRENCH published a collection of his short plays in 2011 entitled SMALL TALK. He also wrote the original story and co-wrote the screenplay for the short film THE BRAVEST, THE BOLDEST which was an official selection at the 2014 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL. Eric TEACHES in the English Department at the FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY in New York City. Eric’s major influences are IBSEN, BECKETT, PINTER and DAVID LYNCH.
His started thinking about an idea for this project as the situation in the Ukraine began to deteriorate, and the tense imagery in the media – the masked soldiers, the stand offs, the confusion – began to enter his story ideas. Ultimately this is why he decided to explore a tense situation involving a SOLDIER and a PASTOR.
SHAYFER JAMES is a MUSICIAN who as well as being one of the ‘New and Noteworthy’ on iTunes, frequently performs at the MANDERLAY BAR home of ONE OF US favorite SLEEP NO MORE. He weaves surprisingly genuine musical landscapes that evoke the gauzy, sweaty sexuality of gulf-coast barrooms but also the fantastical, narcotic mysticism of a Lewis Carroll-inspired three-ring circus. His influences when conceiving EULOGY include FELLINI and LYNCH- he likes the idea of the the well cut man in a suit who has dirty fingernails.A painting on his wall of a ghostly woman in a veil was the starting point for this musical performance piece. 7 sad Ophelia-like women mourning for the poet they all loved but never loved them back IN A CHURCH was very compelling.
The weird widows are made up of a group of EXPERIMENTAL THEATER performers who make it their mission to play with diverse spaces using their bodies to create something.
You can catch MR JAMES every Tuesday (for free) in his new role as resident musician at the ROCKAWAY.
