Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHONE OF US artistic director Maya Korn and ONE OF US sympathiser Kirsty Young went on a GOTHIC pilgrimage to WHITBY, known for being the first place Dracula landed in Stoker’s novel (among other things).

The journey is not a simple one if you are not a resident of the North with a car. It involved an overnight stay in Leeds, a 7AM bus to Whitby (that lasts 3.5 hours), a return coach to Scarborough (16:30PM), train to York and then London meaning they returned at 23:30PM. BUT this epic journey is well worth the trip to bring you:

HOW TO MACABRE

1. GET CREAM TEA @Sherlock’s Coffee House

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHDid you know there was a BBC Radio 4 Show called by Loren D. Estelman called ‘SHERLOCK HOLMES VS DRACULA?’ We did. It was broadcast on the 19th December in 1981:

The year is 1890. In August, the Demeter, a schooner, is discovered adrift off the English coast near Whitby Harbour, its crew missing, its murdered captain lashed to the wheel, and its only passenger is a sinister black dog. This impenetrable mystery is clearly a case for the inimitable Sherlock Holmes who is approached by Thomas Parker, on behalf of his Whitby Editor, to take up the case, which he does. But for the first time in his illustrious career, the great detective is baffled. Clearly the crew have been murdered and dumped overboard, but what can account for the captain’s expression of imponderable terror and his acute loss of blood, or the ship’s strange cargo — fifty boxes of earth?

The game is afoot, and Sherlock Holmes, aided as ever by the faithful Dr. Watson, finds himself on the trail of no mortal enemy, but the arch-vampire himself — Count Dracula…

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHObviously, WE couldn’t not therefore go to the Sherlock Holmes tea house. Maya got Lady Grey, Kirsty got Earl. The scones were fresh baked and warm with crunchy sultanas. An indulgent breakfast for 2 world weary travelers.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHThere are lots of cute bric-a-brac shops in Whitby that are fairly priced and good quality. Maya’s favourite was the above (Whitby Antiques and Collectibles Emporium) where she discovered Whitby Jade, bought a vintage 50s Vulcanite cross, a doll (ONE OF US PROP), a 70s beaded bag and peacock feather fan, all for way under £100. Kirsty got a beautiful Bakelite bird pin (that will be photographed later).

3. GOTH’S BE GETTING THEIR RUNES READ @Spiritual Connections (Whitby’s Witchcraft Shop)

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

If  a rune reading comes your way why would you refuse? It’s £3 a pop and you get to keep your rune and hang out with the lovely Barry. What did the reading say? Well that would be telling! Barry also gave us both budding daffodils which may have made our day. WHITBY GOFF’s are just nicer than normal people.Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH4. THE ABBEY Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

It was windy.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHBut worth it.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHLegend has it that you can never count the right amount of steps up to the Abbey/East Cliff (it’s supposed to be 199). Kirsty was 1 off the total, Maya was 5 off (fail). FUN FACT: the steps were built over 200 years ago originally in wood.

6. WITCH BITCHES NEED FAMILIARS SO LET’S DINE @The Magpie Cafe

Maya was very tempted to buy a song bird. M & K went into a pet shop that only sold fish, finches, canaries and budgies. Maya decided she wanted to pretend she was from the 20s and buy a canary to put in an ornate vintage cage. This didn’t happen. Instead they channeled the birds they had just seen and went to local classic Magpie for fish ‘n chips.  Be warned, this is everyone’s favourite lunch spot so there is always a 15-20 minute queue but it’s well worth it.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHLook it’s Kirsty’s new bakelite burrrrrd.

7. The Dracula Experience

No photographic evidence… Did it even happen? We kind of saw Christopher Lee’s cape in the dark…

Very tacky, very fun: Whitby Gothic style.

8. WHITBY ART GALLERY & MUSEUMAutosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHThe art gallery is free, the museum and all its weird curiosities isn’t. The museum was near closing and the lady behind the counter said the time we had left wouldn’t do it justice. But then we found out there was an undergarments expo. Kirsty, being a costume maker, was keen to see it and the ticket master said if we gave Clarence a donation we could sneak in.

This is Clarence.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHTaxidermy croc in drac cape… WANT.

This museum is worth the trip up the hill (there are a lot of hills in Whitby).

9. LET’S AMBLE

There’s so much weird shit to encounter in Whitby, some of the best advice we can give is wander about with an undefined plan and see what you discover.

OneOfUs.Chapel.Poster no blONE OF US are excited to announce we’re organizing another immersive performance this time in Williamsburg New York.

After a sold out performance in London (listed in Time Out, Le Cool London and Who’s Jack among others) we are uniting artists and performers in St Paul’s Lutheran Church.

The Village of Williamsburgh within the Town of Bushwick has seen a lot of changes since 1827. Industrialists (see the remaining relic ‘Domino Sugar Factory’); shore-side mansions; it became a cauldron of pent up energies when Tony Serpico was shot and most recently it has been a haven for creatives. St Paul’s is an emblem of history having witnessed most of these changes since it was born in 1853.

Be transported through a postmodern mish mash of ideas and celebrate this area with us through our site specific performances.

There will be 4 performances of over 20 vignettes over Friday the 28th of March and Sunday the 30th of March. The slots run between: 7-8:30pm,9-10:30pm. Address: St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Williamsburg, 334 S 5th St 11211. The nearest subway is Marcy Ave JMZ.

DRESS WARMLY the CHAPEL is a chilly mistress.

Pieces will include:

The Chair, the Table

Dealing with how objects, people, and space inform and control one another, the project focuses on how an object can be made uncanny via its theatricalized setting. Even the most mundane object bears witness to an event. As objects of ritual, they may hold cherished memories or sacred lore.  Broken, misused, overused, ritualized or multiplied, objects can determine the nature of a space or the character of their users.

Emma Stirling, Yates Norton with Artwork by Tom Laprade and Aaron Lehman.

Runaround

This piece will explore issues of violence and alienation as a result of society’s taboos against female physicality. How and why do we destroy our own bodies, and what occurs at the breaking point? The artist will create a multitudinous self to present before the audience through a combination of audio and visual elements, which will be manifested and destroyed before the audience.

Carina Finn

Death is a Salesman

A woman confronts a used car salesman about faulty breaks on a car she purchased, then ends up discussing matters of life, death, and redemption, before finally partaking in a high-stakes game of scrabble.

Linda Wu

Ech0

A kiosk for temporal meditation and reflection. Modern science and modern thought (the Renaissance invention of perspective; Copernicus, Newton, Einstein) sought to demystify and explain physical space, leaving no place more special than any other; ech0 seeks to combine the notions of non-place (i.e. Internet) and locale (i.e. church) that relays transcendental experience and spirit while breaking conventional iconography.

Daniel Levya

Host
A sound piece relating to the diverse history of the church’s inhabitants. A new denomination assumes ownership not so much adopting the presence of the previous tenants as they make their own mark, but unable to remove the past’s impact completely. A residue like ghosts exists in the space, and my sounds will be representative of that airiness; phasing in, phasing out.

Adam Stoves

Patient Saint
SAINT GENEVIEVE EXCLUSIVE APPEARANCE. In his penultimate demonstration, Dr. Charcots prize patient and celebrity hysteric displays the wrong symptoms.

Samantha Beach, Kyle Bales and Group

Eulogy

We grieve alongside 7 Widows while a fallen poet mourns a life of unrealized love.

Shayfer James and Group

There Art Thou Happy
Shooting the Friar Lawrence scene for a modern re-telling of Romeo and Juliet, A film crew struggles to get the last shot.

Eric Fallen

Cleansing Concordia

An interactive ritual cleansing with volunteers from the audience where the participants will talk, recite an agreement together as they wash their hands of the dominant powers that be and reclaim their individualism. Gabriel Don

Whoso Walketh Wisely

After facing expulsion from private school for starting up a coven-brothel, spirited Alice arrives on at the dusty doorstep of unsuspecting Frank with a backpack full of raw beef, desperately in need of an oven. Propelled by the illusion that they will soon part ways forever, these unlikely companions expose colors of each other long kept in the dark. But are they truly strangers? Or have they collided many times before?

Laura Heckel

Every Time I Break the 7th Commandment, An Angel Gets a Hard On

A visual exploration of the ideology behind one of the 10 commandment’s most disputed and argued over tenets, “Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery.” The point is to place the spectator at odds with his/her own sexuality and the fear of judgement. An investigation into the heart of desire, the sin of lust, and the castigation that follows.

Sebastian Pinaud

As well as visual art work from Ursula Mur, Satoshi Okada,  Terry Huber, Mohanee Alingasa Ramchandani’s ‘Visions of Meditative Practice,’ Michal Verred Ammar’s ‘Inner Rooms.’
